Braces for kids aren't something a new parent has in mind, but the time quickly approaches when discussing the topic. Kids grow up fast, and so do their teeth.

When your child's dentist mentions that it might be time to see an orthodontist, you might have many questions! If you're curious about what having braces might mean for your child, keep reading.

Why Kids Need Braces

Braces are very common for kids and teenagers, and millions of kids get them every year. There are several reasons why.

As children lose their baby teeth and adult teeth take their place, they often come in crooked. This is because of a lack of room in the mouth and jaw.

Jaw problems are likely to occur as well, causing issues like overbites and underbites.

There are also instances of injury and baby teeth not falling out that could mean need braces.

Treatments Available

The most common form of braces is metal brackets and wires that are attached to the teeth. These will shift the teeth and cause them to straighten out. Your child will have regular check-ups to adjust the wires and check on the progress.

Invisalign is another treatment that is comparable to braces. Invisalign consists of clear plastic aligners that are changeable and removable. As the child's treatment progresses, they will receive a different set of aligners every six weeks.

One of the benefits of Invisalign is that it might be less painful, and since the aligners are clear, it might boost your child's confidence with having braces.

Another treatment option is lingual braces that sit in the back of the mouth instead of the front. Lingual braces might be preferred because they're nearly unnoticeable. However, not every dentist will know how to do this treatment, as it's a specialty.

In addition to needing braces, your child may need some other dental work done, such as rubber bands, headgear, bumpers, etc. All of this work may be done before or during braces treatment.

Orthodontists for kids will be able to suggest the type of treatment your child needs and set up a plan to get their teeth in great shape.

How Long do Braces Last?

The length of time your child has braces will depend on the severity of their case and the dental problems they need to fix.

In general, the length of treatment for braces will be anywhere from 18-24 months, with some cases needing more time.

Cost of Braces For Kids

The cost of braces can make any parent nervous! Thankfully, most braces cost around $3,000-$6,000 depending on the type they choose and how long they will need them.

Many orthodontists offices will provide financial options to make getting braces more affordable for families.
